The Power of Decision: Are You Choosing from Fear or Possibility?

Last week, we explored the idea of spotting opportunities and how easily we miss them when we let doubt, hesitation, or routine take over. But before we can seize opportunities, we first have to decide to take them. And that’s where things often get tricky.
One of the most critical skills in life and business is the ability to make powerful decisions—decisions that aren’t rooted in fear, limitations, or past experiences, but instead come from faith, trust, and a vision of what’s possible.
How We Sabotage Ourselves in Decision-Making
Take my client, Val, for example. Last week, she got a call from Forbes Riley inviting her to spend two nights at a spa. That’s an incredible opportunity, right? But what was Val’s first reaction?
Her mind immediately flooded with thoughts like:
❌ I don’t have time.
❌ How much is this going to cost?
❌ I have too many things going on.
And to be fair, she was juggling a lot—she had a major presentation to deliver on Thursday, and on Saturday, she was leaving for a cruise. Logically, it seemed like she couldn’t possibly make it all work. But logic isn’t always the best guide for decision-making. That was her amygdala talking—the part of the brain designed to keep us “safe.” But safe doesn’t mean successful, expansive, or fulfilling. Safe often means stuck.
Last week, I wrote about how opportunities often show up in unexpected ways and how we can train ourselves to recognize them. If you missed it, you can read it here.
How to Make More Powerful Decisions
Instead of letting fear win, Val took steps to override that default programming:
1.She Got Clear on What She Really Wanted – If time and money weren’t factors, would she want to go? The answer was a resounding yes. When we strip away fear and excuses, our real desires become obvious.
2.She Recognized How the Brain Works – The mind naturally resists change and leans toward familiar patterns. But once you understand that fear-based thoughts aren’t truth, just outdated programming, you can start interrupting them.
3.She Found Support – The brain is sneaky, and left to its own devices, it will justify every excuse. That’s why having an accountability partner, mentor, or friend to hold space for you is crucial. In Val’s case, her friend Sandy played that role. Instead of letting her talk herself out of it, Sandy kept gently reminding her: “Just imagine how much fun this could be! We can hang out, relax, and be closer to Forbes too.” That encouragement was enough to shift Val’s perspective.
Ultimately, Val chose to say YES—and something incredible happened. Since making that decision, she has been glowing. She’s feeling more aligned, more confident, and she’s attracting other wonderful opportunities into her life. That’s what happens when you make decisions from expansion rather than contraction.
This is what happens when you make decisions from a place of possibility rather than limitation. When you say yes—when you trust that things will align even if you don’t see how just yet—that’s when you step into flow. That’s when life opens up in ways you never expected.
This is the difference between living in fear and living in faith.
The Question to Ask Yourself
So, are you making decisions from your past—rooted in fear, circumstances, and limitations?
Or are you making decisions from your future self—the version of you who believes in possibilities, takes bold action, and trusts that everything will align?
Decisions create our reality. What kind of reality are you building?
